I was able to shadow my mentor Carlos Quiles on October 19, 2016. Not only is he the coach of the Connecticut Spokebenders and the Adaptive sports and mentorship program coordinator but he also is an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University. Along with the professor he teaches in a graduate physical therapy course. This course is during the first semester on Wednesday's. Along side the professor they teach 3 classes that go for 2 hours each. He got into this position when he was first brought in so the graduate students would be able to see first-hand his daily routines. He was used at first as a patient they could do their practical testing on. He has a background in occupational therapy and as he continued to go to each class he began getting more involved. I asked him what interested him about teaching, and he responded by saying I'm a learner who has to see an actual real life situation and he knew by him going to these classes he could help the students grow. During the class he facilitates groups to ensure discussions are happening and during the practical when grad students go over skills, he checks for proper technique. During my time at Quinnipiac with Carlos I was able to see how social able he is and his willingness to help others shined through. Having the opportunity to shadow Carlos Quiles made me even more aware that helping others is something I love doing. The career path I'm choosing to take does just that. I will be assessing injuries to then best provide them with the appropriate care.
